SNYDER ALUMNI NEWS
"Go west, young man........go west."
Artie Sutcliffe never listened to Horace Greeley when he uttered those famous words. Artie is going North.
And I mean North......all the way to Alaska. Artie and a buddy from L.A. are driving an RV from California to
Alaska for what sounds like the journey of a lifetime. I received this email from Artie on Monday, June 27.

Ricky
I'm  in LA  getting ready to leave tomorrow to head north to Alaska. We have a huge motor home. I'll keep
you posted along the way.
Sut

I'm sure Artie will have some great experiences to tell us about so I look forward to hearing from him and
reporting it on this page. I know Artie wanted to make the last "nite out" but he was preparing for the trip.
He will definitely be at a future event and I know he will have some great photos and some great stories to
tell. So I wish him luck, good weather, and no flats!

Artie....if you get a chance to read this.......have a great trip......we'll see you soon.

A STAR IS BORN
Received this from Diane Rogalski on Monday, June 27.

Hi Rick:

Here is an item of interest for the new web pages.

Go see War of the Worlds.  It opens this Wednesday and I am an extra in the film.  My scene is set on a parkway - everyone's
car has stopped at the same time and we are gathering together to find shelter and escape from the aliens.  I'm wearing a black
ski jacket with a very colorful woolen scarf and the car I was in is a light green Rav4.  I haven't seen the film yet so I don't know if
I'm really in it or if I wound up on the cutting room floor.  What a lot of fun we had shooting this in Staten Island.

Diane

Well, Diane........good luck in your film debut. I plan on going to see the movie and I hope to see you on the big screen.

ALASKAN ADVENTURE

Left LA June 25 ,through Ore. and Wash. into Canada to a seaport
called Prince Ruppert. Loaded us and the motorhome onto a ferry and sailed the
inner passage to Juneau , Alaska then drove to Fairbanks and Anchorage.
Stopped at Denali Federal Wildlife Preserve and we stumbled onto a momma
grizzly with 2 cubs who were up a tree. The mom charged at us to frighten us
away. IT worked. Next we drove the Alaskan Highway through the rest of
Alaska and into the Yukon section of Canada. It's totally wild. We have seen
bears, caribou, deer, elk, moose, bald eagles, ospreys, arctic ground
squirrels, beavers, mink, lynx, foxes, both the animals and the humans, and all of
them on the roadsides and sometimes in the road. Some mountain goats were
in the road and I got out of the motor home and they started head butting me
so I had to climb up the rear ladder of the motor home to escape. Currently
in Vancouver, a beautiful city with one of the biggest drug problems in the
world. They give away heroin because they think it stops break ins, etc. I
don't see how they think it's working. I'll keep you posted. We still have 4
more weeks to go. Say hello to everybody

BACK FROM ALASKA

Well, it looks like Artie Sutcliffe is back home safe and sound from his trip to Alaska. I am sure he
has lots of stories and photos to share with us when we see him. Here is the latest email I receivec.
Rick

Over  8000  miles  in 40 days we drove  the 37  ft. motor home. Went through  California, Oregon,  Washington , British  Columbia, boarded  a
ship through  the  inner  passage  to  Juneau , Alaska. Next , back  on  the ship  to  Haines , Alaska  and  drove  to  Fairbanks  and  Anchorage.
Stopping  in  National  Parks  like  Denali  along  the  way. Coming  back  we  took  the  Alaskan  highway into  the  Yukon  Territory  of  Canada
down  into  Alberta and  Lake  Louise  the  most  beautiful  lake  I  have  ever  seen . Next to the  city  of  Vancouver , a great city  with  a
modern  waterfront  and  downtown  but  with  one  of  the  biggest  drug  problems  in  the  world. Canada  has  some  sort  of  program  where
addicts  get  free  needles  and  heroin  not  meth. They  feel  it  will cut  down  on  crime. To  me  it  has  collected  the  largest  amount  of
junkies  I  have  ever  seen  in  one  place. Anyway  it  didn't take  away that  Vancouver  is  a  great  city. On to  Vancouver  Island  where  there
are  hundreds  of  lakes  to  fish  or  swim  in. We stayed  3  days  at  lake  Cowachan , fishing, waterskiing, cooking  out  and  drinking  soft
drinks  of  course. Also  a  lot  of  funny  smelling  cigarettes  were  being  passed  around. Eventually  made  our  way  to  the  city  of
Victoria on  the  tip  of  Vancouver  Island, another  great  town  with  a  lot  of  bars  and  resturants  on  the  harbor. We  took  a  sea plane
tour  and  then  boarded  a  ferry  to  take  us  to  Port  Angeles, Washington. Made  our  way  down  the  coastline through  Wash.  and
Oregon. Fell  in  love  with  a  small beach  town  Cannon  Beach ,Oregon ,it's like  a small  artists community  with  galleries, coffee houses,
poetry readings, good  resturants  and  most  of  all a  beautiful  beach  with  monster  rock  formations  all  over. Eventually  back  on  the  road
down  through  Oakland, Frisco, Santa  Barbara, into  LA-LA -Land .The  city   of  Angels. My  friend  Tommy lives  just  off  the  beach  in  Santa
Monica. It  was  the  trip  of  a lifetime  for  me  ,our  gas  cost was  over  3  grand  but  worth  it.Time  to  start  planning  the  next one. I'm
back  in  JC so let  me  know  about  the  next  get  together.
